Blacksmithing for Bladesmiths: (1 Day Class)

This class is recommended as a precursor to the Basic Bladesmithing class, but is not required.

Shop Safety
General Smithing Tool intro and common hazards
Over-view of Propane and Coal forge concepts and use
Skills Covered:
- Hammer techniques
- Tapering
- Rounding square stock
- Squaring round stock
- Punching holes
- Peening
- Quench
- Flash Temper
- Forging Bevels

Students will complete 1 of each the following Projects encompassing skills (above):
- 1 Hook- Round scroll or Fish tail scroll
- 1 Tool- Chisel, Punch, or Scribe
- 1 Letter Opener

Basic Bladesmithing: (1 Day Class)

At the completion of this class, students will leave with a forged and rough ground Full Tang knife, ready for Heat Treatment. Students will Forge, Normalize, Anneal, and Rough Grind a Full Tang Knife

Instruction will cover:

Types of Steel
Parts of a Knife
Steps in the Knife Making Process:
- Point, Taper, Pinch, Bevels, Tang
- Rough Grinding- Profile, Ricasso, Blade, & Tang
- 1st Stage Heat Treating:
  - Normalize
  - Anneal

Intro to Bladesmithing: (1 Day Class)

Students will Forge, Normalize, Anneal, and Rough Grind a Hidden Tang Knife

Instruction will cover:

Types of Steel
Parts of a Knife
Steps in the Knife Making Process:

Heat Treating & Finish Grinding: (1 Day Class)

PreRequisite: Basic Bladesmithing, Intro to Bladesmithing, or similar Experience

In this class, students will Normalize, Harden (Quench), and Finish Grind a Full or Hidden Tang Knife.

Students will bring their own forged and rough ground knife completed in the Basic or Intro classes, or may purchase one to use from our web store when registering or on the morning of the class.

Instruction will cover:

Normalizing
Annealing
Hardening (quenching)
Tempering
Finish Grinding

Handles and Guards: ( 1 Day Class)

PreRequisite: Basic/Intro to Bladesmithing, Heat Treating/Grinding, or similar Experience.

This class will utilize the blades from the Basic or Intro classes, which students will bring to class, or they may purchase one to use from our web store when registering or on the morning of the class.

Types/Styles of Guards and Bolsters
Handle Design- Form follows function
Materials used
Process of Fitting the Guard to the Blade
Fastening Methods and Techniques

Sheath Making: (1 Day Class)

Students will create a sheath for their own fixed blade knife.

Instruction will cover:

All about Leather
Leather working tools
Sheath styles and designs
Knife retention
Pattern Making
Basic Tooling
Stitching
Staining & Finishing

Forge Welding for Knife Makers: (A Basic Forge Welding 2 Day Class)

Students will learn the concepts of Forge Welding and create their own simple damascus billet.

Advanced Damascus: (2 Day Class- must have completed Basic Class)

Students will delve deeper into Pattern Welding, learning about creating different patterns and ending with the creation of their own complex damascus patterned billet.

Intermediate Blacksmithing: (2 Day Class)

Students receive instruction on the forging of general blacksmithing tools, such as 2 types of Pokers & a Water scoop tool.

Blademithing Tongs Class: (1 Day Class)

Students receive instruction on the forging of blacksmith tongs. Focus will be on Tongs used in Bladesmithing.

Bladesmithing for Youths: (2 Day Class)

Students will create a Full Tang, cord wrap handle Knife

Notice:

Based on our current class offerings, Completion of the classes need to complete a knife will cost a student approximately $510, which includes all materials, fuel, equipment, grinding belts, steel, and Instruction over a period of 3 full days. Actual completion of a knife is based on individual ability.
